Gut Health: 3 Steps to Greater Joy!

You deserve to be happy, feel joy and smile from deep within. 

However, we all have days when it’s easy to get sucked into negativity and despair. When nothing seems to go your way. When the craziness around you starts to influence your own thoughts. When you wish you were as awesome as someone else who “seems” to have it all worked out…

Stop there and take a lovely deep belly breathe…because I have a few simple strategies that you can implement today to start increasing your level of joy. Every day is a new opportunity for growth, and today is the day to choose to honour your right to whole hearted happiness. 
 

Let Go of Perfection

When you expect perfection, you set yourself up for disappointment. Remember… nobody is perfect!  Thinking you need to be perfect is simply setting yourself up for a sense of failure and overwhelm - or worse, you may freeze and not even get started on your task.

On the road to self-improvement, there will be potholes, cracks in the pavement and distractions on the sidelines. This is completely normal and natural. Judging yourself too harshly for not being perfect is a major joy killer.

Eat More Fermented Foods and Probiotics

Fermented foods might not seem to have much to do with happiness from the outside however, on the inside they can make a huge difference. By adding probiotic rich foods like sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi, miso and cultured yogurt into your diet, you’ll strengthen your body’s ability to produce serotonin, the happy hormone.

Serotonin is produced in large amounts in the gut, however when our gut bacteria isn’t healthy, our body has a hard time producing serotonin and transporting it to our brain.

The gut is often referred to as the second brain and for good reason. A balanced probiotic rich gut makes it easy to produce hormones that flood the brain with positive feelings. Studies have even looked into probiotics as a way of treat depression and anxiety! 

The key to adding fermented and cultured foods, and probiotics to you diet, is to go slow.  Start with small amounts daily, listen to your body, and gradually increase if all is going well.
 

Watch Your Thoughts

Your thoughts can be wonderful and detrimental at the same time. They have the ability to build you up or they can hold you back from taking action towards your goals.

The only way to really know what’s going on in your own head is to sit down and watch the movie that only you can see. Through the daily practice of being aware of your thoughts and reflecting upon them as they pass… without judgement, you can start to understand yourself a whole lot better.

This is a place where massive growth happens. If you notice a lot of negative self-talk you can now consciously take action to reframe it. This one action alone, even for just a few minutes a day, has the ability to increase your joy and decrease your stress tenfold!
