Gut Health: My Favourite Teas for Healthy Digestion & Gut Loving Wellness

There’s nothing better than drinking a warm cup of tea, at least 60 minutes after a rich meal to help promote digestion. When feeling bloated and uncomfortable the right herbal tea is a great option to reach for.  Whether it’s fresh herbs or dried,  a digestion supporting tea may help to bring an almost instant sense of relief and comfort.  Plus, the use of fresh herbal teas daily are fantastic for overall health and wellness.  Did you know that many of the long and active living elders of Ikaria drink herbal tea, freshly picked from their garden, on a daily basis?

Peppermint tea is my go-to remedy for an upset stomach, gas, bloating or simply helping the digestive process along. It provides quick refreshing relief and, it’s tasty too. I also like to blend peppermint with other less yummy tasting herbs to help make them go down with mor ease.

One thing that hugely affects gut health, in a negative manner, is stress. When you’re stressed all of your inner resources are diverted to deal with the lingering “threat” whether it’s real or perceived. This doesn’t leave much energy for the digestive process and may lead to serious issues over time. When I’m feeling stressed out or anxious I reach for licorice root.

Licorice root tea helps calm the nervous system while promoting healthy digestion. It’s naturally sweet and I find a cup of licorice tea after dinner helps rid any cravings for a chocolatey dessert (not that there’s anything wrong with that… sometimes). I’ve used licorice root tea to reduce heartburn, plus it’s very soothing for stomach and intestinal lining irritation.

Nettle tea is a deep green tea made from stinging nettle leaves. It’s high in magnesium which has been shown to help to relax the muscles in the colon, making for easier elimination. Nettle is high in nearly every mineral and chlorophyll which helps with detoxification. I like to blend my nettle leaves with peppermint and licorice for a triple power tea that meets all my digestive needs. The licorice adds sweetness, while the mint detracts from the grassy tasting nettle. It’s really a lovely blend.
